The Paris Play Film Festival was created in 2016. Its first edition took place in June 2016, in the historical heart of Paris: the Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood. The second edition happened in July 2017 with films premiering at the Balzac movie theater on the Champs-Elysées.

The film is directed by Joel Crawford, who has worked on multiple DreamWorks Animation films, including Trolls and the Kung Fu Panda franchise, and is produced by Mark Swift (Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted). Play is based on a true story, but the social, societal and moral issues discussed in it are universal and go beyond borders. Although filmed in Sweden and featuring older children, Play has overtones of the James Bulger case in UK, with the group developing rules almost independently of its members. Even the victims become complicit, calling back a child who attempts to escape, evoking ideas of Stockholm syndrome and horrific wartime collaborations.
